Herbal medicine. Illustration of a plant of Rhaponticum thracicum. Originally thought of as belonging to the genus Rhaponticum, R. thracicum was later reclassified as a type of rhubarb. Rhubarb has been used as a medicinal plant for at least 2700 years in Chinese culture. This woodcut comes from Medicina Aegyptiorum by Prosper Alpini, published at Leiden in 1719.
