When the moors become very wet due to sudden and long periods of rain, the streams on Kinder Scout fill quickly, carrying peat off the moors. This can be seen in the discolouration of the water as shown here. With climate change, erosion is now a serious issue with large areas of dried up peat being washed away. The lack of peat and dry weather affects the growth of the natural vegetation which in turn makes the peat less stable and more easily eroded when the rain comes. This image is exclusive to Alamy.
