Portrait of a lioness near a recent kill, Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania is the world's largest inactive, intact and unfilled volcanic caldera and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The floor of the crater is approx. 100 square miles and lies at 6000 ft above sea level and the crater rim is over 9000 ft. The crater hosts a large population of mostly resident and some non-resident wildlife and is the ancestral home of the semi-nomadic pastoralist Maasai people. A pair of lionesses had taken down a zebra and were besieged by spotted hyena trying to steal the carcass. After eating their fill the lionessess abandoned the carcass to the hyenas.
