Common Reed / Phragmites australis or Phragmites communis flower head panicle (end of season). Don't confuse with Bulrush / Reedmace - Typha species.


Familiar aquatic plant which grows in still water (swamp, ditches, fens) as well as running water, and favours peat or clay-like soils. Flat smooth leaves, 3-10ft tall, creeping root, nodding panicle of flowers which appear purple and in spikelets, then turn brown.
