King Rudolph of Swabia was elected as an opposition king by the German princes when Pope Gregory VII and Henry IV of France were fighting each other. Rudolph died in 1080, shortly after becoming king. This illustration is taken from a bronze plate in the cathedral at Merseburg in what is today eastern Germany.
