According to Chinese mythology, Shen Shu (left) and Yu Lei were ordered to guard the Door of the Devils.

According to Chinese legend, there grew on a mountain in the Eastern Sea a huge peach tree whose lowest branches formed the Door of the Devils. Two spirits (pictured in the early 1900s illustration), Shen Shu (left) and Yu Lei were ordered to guard the passage. Anyone who died that had wronged other people was bound by the gods and given to tigers. The emperor had the portraits of the two spirits painted on tablets and hung above door to keep away evil spirits. During the Tang dynasty, the names of the spirits were changed to Chin Shupao and Hu Ching-te.
