From the Great War published in 1919 photographer uncredited. Scheidemann in his speech used the phrase Long live the German republic! Once made, the proclamation of a republic could not be withdrawn. Ebert was said to be furious when he learned of his friends accidental proclamation, but realised there was no turning back, so the idea of a constitutional monarchy was blocked.
