Adder (Vipera berus) camouflaged in grass. This is a wide-ranging snake that is found throughout Eurasia. It inhabits moorland, woodland and open country, feeding on small mammals, birds, lizards and frogs. It kills its prey with a venomous bite. It is the only poisonous snake in Britain, although its venom is not strong enough to kill an adult. Young children and the elderly may be at risk, however. The adder can reach a length of around 90 centimetres, although it is usually shorter than this.
