Orientia tsutsugamushi bacteria infection. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a capillary infected with Orientia tsutsugamushi bacteria (dark purple). O. tsutsugamushi is the causative agent of scrub typhus, which is transmitted to humans through the bite of larval trombiculid mites. The bacteria attack endothelial cells of blood vessels, resulting in vasculitis (inflammation of the blood vessels). The disease is characterised by the formation of a cutaneous ulcerative lesions at the site of the mite bite.
