Portrait of a working Buddhist monk wearing a red bandanna on a country road Myanmar Burma

Every Buddhist male is expected to take up monastic residence twice in their lives once as a novice monk between the age of 10 and 20 and once as a fully ordained monk sometime after the age of 20. The novice monks get an education in the monastery. In the early mornings rows of monks carrying their bowls walk the streets to receive offerings of food from locals who gain merit by their good deeds.
