Monastery kitchen with steaming cauldrons of rice for the monk's midday meal, Mahagandayon Monastery, Amarapura, Myanmar

The traditional alms round, where monks walk from house to house, does not work so well for a large monastery, such as Mahagandayon Monastery, which is a teaching monastery, with many monks and no substantial village in the immediate vicinity. In such cases individual lay people come to the monastery to make large, more occasional offerings, and also local staff will prepare food on behalf of lay donors, or at least cook the rice, as seen in this image.
