Baron Louis Bernard Guyton de Morveau (1737â1816), French lawyer and member of the legislative assembly who gave up his law practice to study and teach chemistry, becoming Director of the Ecole Polytechniqe in 1795. In 1782 he proposed a practical system of chemical nomenclature. In collaboration with Lavoisier, Fourcroy and Berthollet the system was refined and has become the foundation of modern chemical nomenclature. His interests included applied chemistry, mineralogy, metallurgy and balloon flight.
