bromeliad Árbol de la Paz Costa RIca

On June 4, 1989, the decree was signed through which the Ministry of Environment and Energy granted this ceiba-type tree the title of "Monument Tree of La Paz". This Ceiba is one of the five largest trees in Costa Rica, in the community of Río Celeste. The Maleku Indians called it "The Stairs to Heaven" because of its large size. The tree has a thickness of meters in perimeter and 48 meters in height. For the Maleku, the tree had a link with the underworld, since in its cyclopean bearing they believed to divine the passage from earth to heaven. When a cacique died, he would let his body de él rest at the foot of the tree so that his spirit de él would ascend through the trunk to outer spaces. To get to the tree, you have to take the road to the community of La Paz, along the route to the Tenorio Volcano National Park.
