Bone tissue, light micrograph

Bone tissue, light micrograph. Thick ground section of adult compact bone. A dye introduced into the vascular supply reveals the distribution of vessels. The larger size vessels are within osteons (Haversian systems) and called Haversian canals. They interconnect via narrow vessels called Volkmann's canals. Osteons contain osteocytes, seen here as tiny black structures in the osteons and in the interstitial lamellae. Serving as nutrient supply to the living bone, the vessels carry calcium and phosphate and other ions. As the skeleton is the repository for calcium, the vessels provide for exchange of calcium and other ions between bone and the circulation. Unstained ground section. Magnification: x80 when width printed at 10cm.
