El Árbol del Tule (The Tree of Tule), Santa Maria de Tule, Oaxaca, Mexico
The Tule Tree is situated in the town of Santa Maria del Tule in the Mexican state of Oaxaca (pronounced Wahaka). It's the largest tree in the world by girth. It was suspected to be several trees fused together. But a DNA analysis in 1997 revealed that it was genetically one tree. The tree was planted around 1,400 years ago. Today it is not faring well with the surrounding human development that includes proximity to a highway. Experts say it is slowly dying and may not survive the next 50 years.
