Children playing on a beach in central Tripoli, Libya

In 2007/08 the research firm Frontier found that residential sales and rental prices in Tripoli had increased by 65-70%, rising to 150% in some areas, yet we have no sewage treatment system (we try and get our waste across the Med to the beaches of southern France and Italy using the tides). However, the government here has pledged to spend at least $50bn (£33bn) on public works, in particular housing and infrastructure, before 2012. It has $100bn overall earmarked for infrastructure – about seven London Olympics – and private development is taking off. What’s more, Tripoli’s isolation from the world economy and vast oil reserves means it’s practically unaffected by the global downturn.
