Melons thrive best in a light, enriched soil. Plant early in May, when the ground has become warm and dry, in hills 6 feet apart each way. Previous to sowing the seed, mix a few shovelfuls of well-rotted manure in each hill, and plant 12 to 15 seeds; after all danger of the bugs is over, thin out to 3 plants per hill. When about 1 foot long, pinch ofi'the tips, to make them branch, as it strengthens the growth of the vines, and makes the fruit mature earlier. Be careful not to plant pumpkins or squashes near them, as they will hybridize. A few hills, for early use, may be had by sowing on pieces of sod in a hot-bed, and when warm enough transplant to open ground.
