Cape rock thrush male (Monticola rupestris). This bird inhabits rocky upland areas of southern Africa. It is usually solitary and hops around on the ground foraging for food or perches in trees and on rocks. It has a varied diet, feeding on insects, spiders, millipedes, molluscs, small frogs, nectar, fruit and seeds. It has been known to scavenge scraps left by vultures around animal carcasses. It has a melodious song used to define its territory and in mating displays. Photographed in the Injasuti Nature Reserve, South Africa.
