Whale vertebra with old harpoon wound calcified as a bony growth where the blade broke. Bears testament to the intensity of whaling in the 19th C


I found this bone width 25cms on the extent of the lowest tide of the year at Burry Holmes, Gower, Wales UK. Flecks of iron are also visible incorporated into the bony growth. This bone could be several 100 years old and represents an industry of the past which is long gone from this area
