In 1897, English torpedo destroyer Thrasher ran over rocks, bursting main steam pipe. A stoker named Lynch saved another.

The English torpedo destroyer named Thrasher was cruising in September 1897 off the Cornish coast when it ran over Dodman Rocks. The impact burst open the main steam pipe, killing three men and scalding several others. One of men, a stoker (a person who tends the furnace) named Lynch, had been out of way of steam and managed to escape. He heard the cries of one of his mates, James Paul, and plunged back down into the cauldron-like stoke hole, and did the impossible - dragged his comrade back to the deck. Both were injured but survived. Lynch was awarded by Her Majesty the Albert Medal of the First Class. The illustration dates to 1902.
