Ophrys speculum, close-up


It is a herbaceous bulbous geophytes, 5-20 cm high, with lower leaves ovate-lanceolate, arranged in a rosette, and upper leaves and bracts enveloping wide and concave. The inflorescence includes from 2 to 8 flowers with sepals divergent side, greenish color with brown streaks and median sepal oblong, with apex round, brown in color; the petals are short, pubescent, purple. The lip is three-lobed, rimmed with thick hair reddish brown; the median lobe larger, ovate, is almost entirely occupied by a macula silvery bluish-edged yellow, which is the mainstay of the species, while the side lobes are lanceolate, yellow-reddish. The gynostemium, hidden by the sepals, is short and rounded apex.
