Soil cross section showing iron concretions developing in a tropical Ultisol in Belize, Central America

The site is a tropical coastal savanna subject to repeated seasonal waterlogging. Plinthite nodules develop gradually where water table fluctuations result in accumulation of iron oxides. Ultisols are a highly weathered soil type common in the tropics.
