Cape Agulhus Lighthouse situated at the most southern tip of Africa

The Cape Agulhas Lighthouse is situated at Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa. It was the third lighthouse to be built in South Africa, and the second-oldest still operating, after Green Point.[1] It is located on the southern edge of the village of L'Agulhas; the light is operated by Transnet National Ports Authority. Cape Agulhas Lighthouse was commissioned on 1 March 1849. The lighthouse has a unique design that is based on the Pharos of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The original structure was declared unsafe in 1966 and was replaced with a lattice structure in 1968. The community was largely responsible for the restoration of the original structure and the lighthouse was inaugurated again on 25 March 1988 after having being out of service for 20 years. The Lighthouse, which was declared a National Monument in 1973 is located within the Agulhas National Park.
