Runner beans are an easy to grow vegetable in the UK. Most are tall varieties so require support. Originally a perennial from South America, they were imported to Britain in Tudor times and are grown in many gardens as a half hardy annual from seed. the flowers are attractive to flat green beans are best freshly picked and are on average 15 to 20cms long. Slugs and snails are a particular pest problem.
