St GeorgeÐin-the-East. Church in Stepney, in the East End of London. One of the 'Fifty New Churches' or 'Queen Anne Churches'. Built by Nicholas Hawksmoor, 1714 to 1729. St George's was hit by incendiary bombs in May 1941, when the interior was destroyed, and only the walls and the tower left standing. Octagonal pepper-pot over one of the staircase leading to the galleries.
