The use of the shower-bath as a means of coercing criminals into submission to the orders of prison authorities began to be general about the year 1845. Brutality such as this continued well into the 20th century in some Southern prisons. Water torture encompasses a variety of techniques using water to inflict physical or psychological harm on a victim as a form of torture or execution. Unknown source, 1871.
