A circa 1910 advertising postcard image of the Ferguslie thread factory in Paisley, Renfrewshire, - The factory was so big it had its own Fire Station and firemen who lived close to the mills. In 1755 James and Patrick Clark began a loom equipment and silk thread business in Paisley, Scotland. In 1806 Patrick invented a way of twisting cotton together as a substitute for unatainable silk due to the French blockade of Great Britain. The Coates mill was founded in 1826 by James Coats as a cotton thread works and developed into perhaps the largest thread mills in the world.
