Green smooth and wrinkled pea seeds in 3 to 1 ratio Mendel experiments heredity genetics punnett square

Gregor Mendel uncovered the basic principles of heredity by experimenting with garden pea traits such as seed color colour and seed shape texture. Wrinkled seeds are a recessive trait. Wrinkled trait is caused by a gene mutation resulting in a defective, inactive starch branching enzyme. Mendel's experimental crosses produced pea seed in a 3:1 ratio of smooth (round) to wrinkled.
