Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Bacillus megaterium, Gram-positive, endospore-forming, rod prokaryote. Bacillus megaterium is a rod-shaped bacteria that is one of the largest eubacteria found in soil environments. This bacterium forms chains of cells (filaments) that are connected together by extracellular polysaccharides it secretes. B. megaterium can survive in extreme environmental conditions such as desert environments due to the spores it forms (not seen here). Where there are favourable conditions the spores can grow and divide to form vegetative cells. B. megaterium is used as a soil inoculant in agriculture and horticulture. It is an soil microbe that can occur in thermophilic environments. It is consider an important industrial bacterium and has recently been used as a biocontrol agent.
