Palm Cockatoo Probosciger aterrimus aterrimus is the single member of the genus It is the largest of the cockatoos varying in length from 80 cm 31 in to only 70 cm 26in according to the locality from which the bird originates It has entirely greyish black plumage and crest that consists of long narrow feathers which project beyond the nape of the neck The red naked chick patches provide the touch of bright colour and those blush even redder when the bird is excited It provides indication of health In birds in poor condition the cheeks are pale pink The black tipped tongue is visible through the gap between the upper and lower mandible Information from Rosemary Low 1980 Parrots their care and breeding Blanford Press
