Salps. Two salps in the Indian Ocean. Salps are a type of free-swimming tunicate, a chordate marine animal, that feed on phytoplankton, which they siphon from the water. They move by contracting their gelatinous barrel-shaped bodies. This pumps water through the internal feeding filters (green), which strain phytoplankton from the water.
