Giant African Snails in Puerto Rico
Giant African snails found hiding among the vegetation during a survey in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, by the US Department of Agriculture’s Plant Protection and Quarantine program. These snails are major invasive pests, eating almost anything, including food plants, ornamentals, leaf litter and concrete (for the calcium). They also carry a variety of parasites, such as rat lungworm, which can cause meningitis in humans.
