Closeup of Whipple's penstemon or Dusky beardtongue (Penstemon whippleanus) found near the top of Independence Pass in Colorado, USA

Dusky beardtongue, Whipple's penstemon, or Pride of the Mountain (Penstemon whippleanus), can be found at elevations up to 12,000 feet in the Rocky Mountains from Idaho to Mexico. They grow in full sun to partial shade, often in disturbed soils. Blooming in summer to early fall, the blossoms can be dark burgundy, purple, violet, light blue and even creamy white. The flower heads are more tubular than most other penstemons and will show silvery hairs in full sun. The stems can be up to 24 inches tall. These showy flowers are also popular for rock gardens and woodland plantings.
