Crab apple pollenizer planted at the end of a row of young commercial apple trees in a Swiss fruit orchard.

Apples are self-sterile and require cross-pollination between individuals by insects. The crab apple tree here is being used as a source of pollen (a pollinizer or polliniser) for the young commercial trees in the rest of the row. The crab apple tree will bloom contemporaneously with the apple variety in the orchard and its pollen will be carried to the commercial trees by insects.
