Sourness at the root would in itself be sufficient to cause begonias to fail as yours are doing. Not knowing how your soil is or what feeding has been done, I am merely giving sugges- tions which possibly may help you. NECESSITIES WITH GARDENIAS. I prow a general line of stock and am successful with everything but gar- denias. I have need for these and would like to know the essentials of their cultivation. My plants turn yel- low as soon as given water. J. T.—Mich. Gardenias are grown in raised benches, prcferaoly in four to four and one-half inches of soil. They need plen- ty of drainage and the soil should be somewhat rough, so that the water will pass through it readily. Fibrous loam, cow manure and some coarse sand make a good medium. Some Scotch soot may also be added with advantage. Some growers use partly decayed leaves with their soil, but others do not consider these of any benefit.
