Shops at Puerto de Frutos market, Tigre delta, Argentina
The Tigre River Delta, about 18 miles north of Buenos Aires, is formed by the confluence of five rivers, where they flow from the Pampas into the Rio de la Plata. It is a marshy complex produced by the silty rivers and contains hundreds of tiny islands with a mix of grassland, swamp, and true forest, and a variety of animal and plant life. It has been a popular resort since the late 1800s providing horseback riding, hiking, fishing, swimming and other activities. Tourist attractions include catamaran tours of the islands, the Naval Museum, and the famous Puerto de Frutos, a large open-air market. There is a year-round population who go to school, work, and grocery-shop using a system of boats and docks on these car-free inner islands.
