Southern star chart, 1515. Titled in Latin 'Imagines coeli meridionales', this chart shows mythological representations of the constellations of the southern skies. At top right is a dedication to the Archbishop of Salzburg, Cardinal Matthaus Lang, with his coat of arms at top left. At bottom right is text describing the patronage of the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilan I. At bottom left corner the three contributors are named: cartographer Johannes Stabius (who projected the charts); astronomer Conrad Heinfogel (who plotted the constellations); and Albrecht Durer (who drew and engraved the charts). The handwritten annotations at bottom right are by German polymath Johannes Schner (1477-1547). Published in Nuremberg, Germany, in 1515, this is the earliest known European printed star chart.
