Hans Holbein (1497_1543?) painted this portrait of Jane Seymour, the third wife of Henry VIII, between 1536 and 1537. She succeeded Anne Boleyn. Jane married Henry in 1536 and gave birth to the future Edward VI in 1537, dying two weeks later of postnatal complication. Holbein the Younger was a German artist and printmaker and by 1536 had become the King's Painter. The painting is now housed in the Imperial Gallery, the Kunsthistoriches Museum, in Vienna.
