Crocuses beside Carlisle Cathedral Cumbria England

Carlisle Cathedral was founded in 1122 by King Henry 1, originally as a Priory. It became a Cathedral just ten years later. The present Cathedral is considerably smaller than it was for much of its history, much of the nave having been destroyed by Scottish forces in the 17th century. The Cathedral underwent extensive restoration in the mid-19th century.
