The Great Railroad Strike of 1877 began on July 14 in Martinsburg, West Virginia, after the B&O Railroad cut wages for the third time in a year. It spread to other cities and was ended by federal troops and militia after 52 days. This engraving shows the "capture of a hundred rioters by regular troops under Col. Hamilton" in Johnstown, PA.
