Hardy Tree in churchyard of St Pancras Old Church, London; monument created from tombstones disturbed during the construction of St Pancras Station

The Hardy Tree in the churchyard of St Pancras Old Church, London; a monument created from tombstones disturbed during the construction of the Midland Railway's St Pancras rail station in the 1860s. The monument, with the tombstones radiating out from a weeping ash, was created by the young Thomas Hardy, who was in charge of the excavation of part of the graveyard: O Passenger, pray list and catch Our sighs and piteous groans Half stifled in this jumbled patch Of wrenched memorial stones! We late-lamented, resting here, Are mixed to human jam, And each to each exclaims in fear. ‘I know not which I am!’
