Blackbird (Turdus merula) small-medium but large among thrushes. Adult male glossy jet black with orange beak and eye-ring. Female rich brown with dark-bordered whitish throat, often family speckled on breast. Looks long-tailed in direct flight. Young - reddish brown above and slightly paler and spotted below. Habitat - year round resident, migrant and winter visitor over much of Europe, summer visitor to far N. Familiar in farmland, heath, woodland and urban areas. Widespread, frequently common.
