Colourful stress patterns in hard plastic, revealed by imaging between two crossed polarising filters.

Residual or induced stresses in hard plastic can be revealed in vivid colours by viewing the plastic in between two crossed polarising filters. It is used to test the design of metal components by first making them in plastic and using this technique. It can also be used as a creative art form and is suitable for restaurant, cafe or hotel wall displays.
