The UK Supreme Court, Parliament Square, Westminster, London SW1P 3

The UK Supreme Court has assumed the jurisdiction of the Appellate Committee of the House of Lords and the devolution jurisdiction of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. It is an independent institution, presided over by twelve independently appointed judges, known as Justices of the Supreme Court. The court is housed in the refurbished Middlesex Guildhall on London's Parliament Square - opposite the Houses of Parliament and alongside Westminster Abbey and the Treasury - a fitting location for the apex of the justice system. The Supreme Court was officially opened at the start of the legal year in October 2009. The Supreme Court is housed in the former Middlesex Guildhall, on a site which has been directly linked with justice and the law for nearly a millenium. The site is highly symbolic, chosen to represent the United Kingdom’s separation of powers. From Saxon times this area was known as Thorney Island, offering sanctuary for fugitives in the precincts of Westminster Abbey. The present building was completed in 1913, and is the third courthouse or Guildhall to heav been built on the site since 1807.
