And, though thesame time was unquestionably taken advantage of by the enemy,to increase his means of defence, yet every movement in the pro-gress of the expedition to the interior, shows that it was one ofdeliberate and careful adaption of means to the end in view;and that therefore it was better to permit him this advantage, thanto risk the success of the whole army on a hasty or ill providedadvance.
