The exposed limestone slabs of St Lythans Neolithic burial chamber, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales: looking NW at the open chamber with a massive capstone.

The exposed limestone slabs of St Lythans Neolithic burial chamber, Vale of Glamorgan: looking NW at the open chamber with a massive capstone. Originally the chamber was at the E end of a Cotswold-Severn long cairn (30x12m) revetted by a low drystone wall. Higher curved walls flanked the approach to the chamber forming an entrance forecourt. Fragments of human bones & teeth were found in the forecourt along with part of a bone needle, a fragment of polished stone axe, charcoal & sherds of Neolithic Grooved Ware pottery. Access to the chamber had been deliberately blocked using limestone rubble.
