Nitrogen dioxide pollution soars in Madrid, Spain. The anti-pollution protocol has been activated, by which it is requested to use public transport and is limited to speed on M-30 and accesses to M-40 at 70 km / h. As it happens every winter when the situation is anticyclonic, the pollution beret has returned to Madrid. Last Thursday, nitrogen dioxide levels began to skyrocket and, since six in the morning on Sunday, scenario 1 of the City Council's anti-pollution protocol has been active, after being exceeded on Saturday in two air quality measurement stations 180 micrograms per cubic meter of NO2 for two consecutive hours. With scenario 1 of the protocol, the speed of circulation on the M-30 and on the access roads inside the M-40 in both directions is limited to 70 kilometers per hour from six in the morning and it is recommended to leave the car at home and use public transport. The recommendation not to drive by car is twofold, since a large part of the capital and the Community of Madrid are still under a blanket of snow and, what is more dangerous, ice. The regional government recalled this Sunday that it is necessary to limit the use of private vehicles because "you can still find movement difficulties through certain streets of cities and towns and, above all, when parking it in public car parks." In addition, remember Emergencies, the use of public transport will facilitate the cleaning of the roads by the municipal services. The storm Filomena, which left for the western Mediterranean last Sunday, leaving Madrid the worst snowfall in 144 years, is a phenomenon, for which it is colder in the valleys than on the peaks, it is known as thermal inversion. The cold air, plus the polluting particles it contains, remains accumulated in the lower areas. "And since the atmosphere is stable, there is little mixing and pollutants remain confined near the emission sources, that is, in large cities and industrial areas.
