Fool's parsley fruit. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the fruit (cremocarp) of a fool's parsley (Aethusa cynapium). The fruit wall (pericarp) has ten ridges (costae) that enclose two seeds (large red-orange ovals), each of which is in a separate half (mericarp) of the fruit. This fruit is a schizocarp, and at maturity the fruit splits into its two mericarp halves along the central gap, which liberates the seeds. Magnification: x45 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
