Forlater supplies, sow in the open ground as soon as the season will permit; trans-plant or thin out the plants gradually to a foot apart, and keep well early varieties, if sown early in the Spring, are apt to run up quickly toseed, so the head varieties are more suitable for summer use. A strong-growing, hardy annu-al plant, with curious shaped seedpods, which, when young andtender, are highly prized by many,for pickling. Martynia Proboscidea. — This is the variety used for pick-les. The seed should be sown inApril or May, and the plants trans-planted to three feet apart eachway.
