I stumbled upon the sculpture garden while wandering about Reykjavik, and ended up quite pleasantly surprised. The level of detail and the realism of the sculptures is incredible. Absolutely worth a visit, even if you don't visit the museum. You can enter the garden for free from the street behind the museum, and enjoy a leisurely ramble around the sculptures, and then a nap and/or picnic. The garden outside is packed with sculptures that cost you nothing to see, and they're amazing. Some really beautiful and some grotesque. Inside there are 3 floors. At the top is the old living quarters of Einar and his wife, left exactly how it was at the time. The next floor down is the old showroom and houses lots of his very large sculptures, mostly in plaster. At the bottom are more sculptures and paintings. We weren't keen on the paintings but loved most of the sculptures. This gift was not accepted by the Icelandic Parliament until 1914, however. The Parliament contributed 10,000 crowns to the construction of the museum, while a national collection yielded 20,000 crowns in private donations. It can be safely said that the Icelanders had from the very beginning shown a special appreciation for the art of their country's first sculptor and had fully realized the value of his gift to the nation.
